First Opening Day of Summer 2010 has officially ended!
The sun has set on the first Opening Day of the summer. After months of planning, the first round of campers pulled into the gate at 4:00pm lining Elm Creek Rd ready to meet their enthusiastic counselors eagerly waiting their arrival. As Bear Tribe Tap Out echoes through the surrounding Texas hills, we can’t help but realize how incredible this opening was. It was a smooth day filled with excitement and joy reconnecting with returning campers, which make up 90% of the campers registered for the next couple of weeks. The new campers brought an equal joy watching them with yearning eyes wanting to discover everything about camp in just a few minutes. We are privileged to have grown in numbers by one this week compared to last summer with over ˝ of the overall campers here for 2 weeks.
Our staff, although mostly new to Deer Creek this summer, has more than fulfilled our expectations. You can hardly notice the difference in them and the counselors that have been here for a number of years. They have picked up everything and ran with it, continuing to make Deer Creek a part of their hearts and their lives. We have also been blessed to see several previous staff members coming by to visit just to check up on things and wish us “Godspeed” for the summer.
Along with the staff and a few campers, we also have new arrivals at camp including a new waterslide and Tipis. The Tipis have been set up down by the river. The younger cabins staying for two weeks will have an opportunity to spend the night inside of them truly experiencing the outdoors. We are looking forward to this new adventure this summer. We have so many campers that want to spend the night inside of a Tipi we are thinking we might need more to sleep them all!
As we head to Spike’s Hollow we are thankful of the many blessings that have been bestowed on camp. We are happy to say that we all feel that the Lord has wonderful plans for the summer, and we are excited to see what each new day will bring!
